Diagnostic 90% male, 60% female
Not useful for pharyngeal infection
- Isolation of organism in selective media (Thayer-Martin) is the gold standard.
Culture detects 80% to 90% cervical, rectal, and pharyngeal infections.
- Culture all symptomatic site: Recovery of N. gonorrhoeae is improved by two consecutive endocervical specimens or combination endocervical and anal specimens.
Other tests: antigen detection (gonozyme)
- All pregnant patients should be screened for N. gonorrhoeae at initial prenatal visit. The test should be repeated early in the third trimester.
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)—based tests (Gen-probe)—becoming gold standard of testing
