Complications of Treatment of Complex Disease Patterns

 

  1. Despite meticulous dissection by skilled surgeons, the following com­plications may occur when operating and reoperating severe and extensive pelvic endometriosis:

 

  1. Premature menopause

 

  1. Ovarian remnant syndrome
  2. Ligation or severance of a ureter(s)
  3. Ureterovaginal fistula
  4. Vesicovaginal fistula
  5. Rectovaginal fistula
  6. Coloperitoneal fistula with abscess
  7. Bowel obstruction
  8. Sciatic nerve injury
  9. Major arterial or venous injury

 

  1. The risk of such complications may be minimized by the following:

 

  1. Meticulous preoperative preparation
  2. Mechanical and antibiotic bowel preparation
  3. An experienced operative team
  4. Good surgical exposure
  5. Meticulous operative technique using dissection of retroperitoneal spaces
  6. Ureteral catheters selectively
