Drospirenone-Ethinyl-Estradiol

Yaz. What is this medicine for?

Yaz is the preparation of new generation that has recently appeared in pharmacies. Jess® – is low-dose oral contraceptive that contains 3mg of drospirenone and 20 mcg of ethinyl estradiol.
Reducing the dose of estrogen increases the medicine’s safety, as the preparation reduces a risk of cardiovascular complications from the contraceptives’ use. In addition, low doses of hormones are tolerated by women better and cause side effects less.

Due to the fact that Yaz contains such a component, as drospirenone, liquid does not stay in the body (due to the estrogen component). That is why symptoms such as swelling, weight gain, bloating, breast engorgement do not develop.

Contraceptive effect of Yaz is based on the interaction of different factors, most important of which is inhibition of ovulation and changes in cervical secretion. In addition to protect against pregnancy, PDAs have other positive effects, which are taken into account when choosing a method of birth control. The menstrual cycle becomes more regular, less painful menstruation, and bleeding is reduced. The latter may reduce the incidence of iron deficiency anemia.

Finally, the anti-androgenic properties of drospirenone provide a positive effect on the skin, reducing the activity of the sebaceous glands, and as a consequence, the therapeutic effect is achieved. Thus, the medicine Jess® provides women the additional non-contraceptive benefits, which the other oral contraceptives do not provide.

Drospirenone, except contraceptives, has additional properties, in particular anti-mineral corticosteroid activity, which prevents the increase in body of weight.

What doses of the medicine should be taken and how to use Yaz?

The Tablets should be taken daily according to the order, specified on the blister, about the same time, with a small amount of liquid. Interruption (while taking the Yaz tablets) should not be done. The drug is taken by one tablet per day for 28 days. The tablets from each of the next pack should be started after taking the last pill from the previous package. If the hormonal contraceptives in the previous period (last month) have not been used, the tablets should be started at 1-day of woman’s natural cycle (i.e. at the 1st day of menstrual bleeding). You can start take the tablets from the 5th day, but in this case it is recommended to use the additional barrier methods of contraception during the first 7 days of treatment (at the first period of cycle).

What to do in the case of pills’ missing?
If the delay in taking the pills does not exceed 12 hours, there is any reducing of the drug’s contraceptive effect. The missed tablet should be taken as soon as it turned out. The next tablet of this package must be taken at the usual time.

If the delay in taking the pills exceeds 12 hours, the contraceptive protection may be reduced. In this case you should guide by two basic rules: a break of the tablets’ taking can never be exceed 4 days. An adequate suppression of the system of hypothalamic – pituitary – ovaries reaches due to the uninterrupted pills during 7 days only. Accordingly, you should guide by the following recommendations in your everyday life.

The Days 1-7th : a woman should take the last missed tablet as soon as it is possible, even if she has to take two tablets simultaneous. After that she continues to take the pills at the usual time. In addition, during the next 7 days she has to use the barrier methods of contraception (i.e. condoms). In the case if a sexual act took place at previous 7 days, the possibility of pregnancy must be considered. The more pills are missed, the higher the risk of pregnancy.

The Days 8 – 14th: a woman should take the last missed tablet as soon as it is possible, even if she has to take two tablets simultaneous . After that she continues to take the pill at the usual time. With the right pill’s taken during 7 days before a missed dose – it is not necessary to use additional contraception. If not or missing more than one tablet, it is recommended the additional use of the barrier method of contraception during 7 days.

The Days 15 – 24th: the risk of lowering of reliability increases when the period of placebo tablets is approaching. However, if the administration’s scheme has been done properly during 7 days till the miss, there is no need at the additional contraceptive protection. If it is not so, it is recommended to adhere one of the first of the following options, and additional methods of contraception during the next 7 days.

  • A woman should take the last missed tablet as soon as possible, as soon as remember (even if it means to take two tablets simultaneous). The next tablets are taken at the usual time until the end of the active pills in the package. The four inactive pills should be thrown out and a woman should start taking the pill from the next pack immediately. Withdrawal bleeding is unlikely, while there are the active pills in the second pack. At the same time spotting and breakthrough bleeding during the pills’ taking may be experience.
  • A woman may also interrupt the tablets from the current package. Then she should take 4 days break including the days when the pills have not been taken and then start taking the pills from a new package.

If a woman had being missed the active pills, and while taking the inactive pills withdrawal bleeding has not come, it is necessary to exclude pregnancy.
