Parlodel . What is the medication?
Parlodel is a peptide ergot alkaloid, dopamine analogue that inhibits the secretion of prolactin selectively, neutralizing lactotropic dopamine receptors on the lactotropic cells of hypophysis.
Treatment with Parlodel is highly effective to treat a form of amenorrhea, provoked by hyperprolactinemia. In overwhelming majority of patients (regardless of whether hyperprolactinemia is associated with pituitary adenoma or not) the drug causes a sharp drop in prolactin level in blood plasma, normal gonadotrophic hypophysary function and ovulatory menstrual cycles recovery.
Parlodel . What are the Therapeutic Indications?
menstrual irregularities, female infertility;
prolactin-dependent deceases and conditions, accompanied or not accompanied by hyperprolactinemia;
hyper-prolactin disorders, caused by the drugs (e.g., certain psychotropic or antihypertensive drugs);
amenorrhea (accompanied and unaccompanied by galactorrhea), oligomenorrhea;
luteal phase defect.
Prolactin-dependent female infertility:
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome;
Anovulatory cycles (in addition to anti-estrogens such as clomiphene).
Parlodel . What are the Recommendations for Administration?
Parlodel should always be taken with food. In the case of female infertility it is prescribed per 1.25 mg (1/2 tab.) 2-3 times/day. If the effect is insufficient, the dose is increased gradually up to 5-7.5 mg/day (the dosage frequency is 2-3 times/day). Treatment has to be continued until the ovulation’s recovery.
If necessary, the treatment may be continued for several cycles for secondary prophylaxis.
